Email [email protected]. We answer by email.

On the web at app.mechanicbythebook.com, with a free sample. Android and iPhone apps are planned.

It helps if you say which test you were studying (General, Airframe or Powerplant), which web browser you use, the app version, and what you did just before the problem. The app version is shown in the app: open the “You” tab, then “About this app”.

Report a wrong question

If you think a question, answer, explanation or figure is wrong, we want to know.

  1. In the app, after you answer the question, choose “Report a problem with this question”. It opens a draft email in your own mail app with the question's number already filled in. The app does not send the report itself.
  2. Say what you believe is wrong and, if you can, which handbook page, regulation or advisory circular says so.
  3. Send the email.

If no mail app opens, write to [email protected] with the subject “Question report” and the question's number or its wording.

Every report is checked against the FAA source. If the question is wrong, it is corrected in an update and listed on the corrections page. If the source supports the question, the reply says where.

Cancel a subscription

After you cancel, you keep access until the end of the period you already paid for. Cancelling stops the next renewal; nothing more is charged.

Bought on the website

  1. Open app.mechanicbythebook.com and sign in with the email address of the account that bought the subscription.
  2. Open the “You” tab, then “Membership”.
  3. Choose “Manage or cancel subscription”. It opens the page where you manage the subscription.
  4. Cancel the subscription there.

You can also use the link in your receipt email. If you cannot sign in, email [email protected] from the address of your account.

Bought in the Android or iPhone app

The apps are not released yet. When they are, a subscription bought in one of them is managed and cancelled in your Google Play or App Store account, and this page will list the steps.

Paid, but the app shows the free sample

On the website, a subscription is kept with your account. Sign in with the email address you bought it with. Signed out, open the “You” tab, then “Membership”, and choose “Already subscribed?”. Signed in with another address, sign out under “You”, then “Account”, and sign in again with the right one. If that does not work, email us the date of purchase and the plan. Do not send card details.

Delete your account

  1. If you have a subscription bought on the website that still renews, cancel it first (see above). The app does not let you delete an account whose subscription is still renewing, because nobody could then sign in to cancel it.
  2. Open app.mechanicbythebook.com and sign in.
  3. Open the “You” tab, then “Account”.
  4. Choose “Delete account” and confirm.

This deletes your account, your email address and the progress kept with the account. If you cancelled a subscription that still has time left, deleting the account gives up that time. The privacy policy says exactly what is deleted and what is kept.

Refunds

For a subscription bought on the website, payments already made are not refunded, except where the law requires a refund. If you were charged in error, for example charged twice or charged after you had cancelled, email [email protected] from the address of your account and say what happened. A charge made in error is corrected. The terms give the full refund policy.

Questions people ask

Are these questions from the FAA test?
No. Every question in the app is an original practice question written from the FAA's own publications and regulations. The app is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the FAA.
Will I pass if I use the app?
No study aid can promise a pass, and this one does not. What the app does: it explains every answer, shows the FAA's own words that settle it, and gives you a timed practice exam for each test in the FAA format.
What is in the free sample, and what does a subscription unlock?
For each test, the free sample has 30 questions, a 20-question mini exam and 3 lessons; the glossary is free too. A subscription unlocks all 2,864 questions (General 1,374, Airframe 773, Powerplant 717), the full timed practice exam for each test, and every lesson and flashcard. It is $19.99 a month or $79.99 a year, for all three tests, and renews until you cancel.
Who checked the questions?
Every question cites the FAA source it was written from and quotes the words that settle its answer. Each was checked against that source: its answer, its wrong choices, its explanation and its quote. If you find an error, please report it.
Is the practice exam the same as the FAA's test?
It matches the FAA format for each test: General is 60 questions in 2 hours, Airframe and Powerplant are 100 questions in 2 hours each, and each needs 70% to pass, with no feedback until you submit. Its questions are the app's own, and a score on it does not predict your result on the FAA's test.
Does it work without an internet connection?
The web app is a website: it needs a connection to open and to load the full course.
Is there an Android or iPhone version?
Not yet. Android and iPhone apps are planned, with the same account and progress as the web app. Today A&P by the Book works in any web browser, on a phone, tablet or computer, at app.mechanicbythebook.com.
Can I use what is in the app for real maintenance work?
No. The app is for studying. For work on an aircraft, use the current manufacturer's instructions, approved data and the current rules.
